CIPD SUPPORT · UNITED STATES
CIPD assessments are built around UK professional standards, but many learners study while working in very different HR environments. If you work in the United States, the challenge is not to make your experience sound British. It is to understand what the assessment criterion is asking, use the right evidence and explain your US workplace context clearly.
CIPD is not the US version of SHRM, and a CIPD qualification should not be presented as a direct US degree equivalent. They are different professional routes. What matters for your assessment is understanding the CIPD framework you are enrolled on and meeting its assessment criteria.
This page is therefore not a generic “USA service” page. It is a practical guide to the issues we most often need to clarify when a learner’s workplace experience comes from outside the UK.
The differences are usually practical rather than academic. These are the areas worth getting right before you start writing.
You may naturally write about PTO, benefits, at-will employment, HRBP structures or people operations. CIPD briefs may use different terminology. Keep your real workplace context, but connect it explicitly to the language and concept used in the assessment criterion.
You do not need to replace an authentic US example with a UK example simply to sound more relevant. Explain the organisational situation, show why it answers the criterion and support the analysis with appropriate evidence.
FLSA, FMLA, Title VII and other US frameworks may be useful where the criterion or scenario calls for legal context. They should not be inserted into every answer. Where a brief specifically asks for UK law or UK practice, follow the brief.
Many US learners are more familiar with APA. CIPD providers commonly expect Harvard-style referencing. The core principle is still straightforward: cite the source where you use the idea and provide a consistent reference list.
For us, useful CIPD support starts with the assessment brief, not with a pre-written answer. We look at the command verb, the assessment criterion, the expected depth and the evidence you already have from your own work.
That may mean helping you decide whether an example is actually relevant, finding stronger research, structuring an argument, fixing Harvard referencing or interpreting assessor feedback after a referral. The objective is a response that makes sense in your own professional context while still answering the CIPD requirement.
The qualification level changes the expected depth of your response. Use our main level pages to see the units we currently support.

We are Abdul Kabir and Mehwish Sheikh, both MBA-qualified in Human Resources. We have worked with CIPD learners since 2020 across different countries and qualification levels.
That international experience is why we do not expect a learner in the United States, Saudi Arabia or the UAE to manufacture a UK workplace context. Our role is to help you understand the CIPD requirement and present relevant professional experience in a way that is clear, evidence-based and appropriately referenced.
We are an independent learner-support service. We are not CIPD and we are not a CIPD-approved study centre.
Send us your level, unit code, assessment brief and what you are finding difficult. We can then tell you where support would actually be useful.
